Poetic Justice in Southern Alberta: An Evening with Award Winning Author Natalie Appleton

In 2016, Natalie Appleton was long listed for the 2016 CBC Creative Non-Fiction Contest for her non-fiction story about Lethbridge's Leong family.  In partnership with the Galt Museum and Archives, the Centre for Oral History and Tradition invites you to a free lecture where Appleton, a former Lethbridge Herald journalist, will discuss her writing about this historic Lethbridge family.   

Appleton will look at several short works that explore the fantastical past of the Prairies and the untold lives of minorities, some of which she discovered while researching and writing A Century in Ink, a book that chronicles one hundred years worth of Lethbridge history through the articles of the Lethbridge Herald. 

These stories--both creative non-fiction prose and poetry--are acts of journalism that aim to name these men and women, tell of their families and hopes before they fell, but also to ask the media, the public and the police what if? with a startling voice that steps out from behind the page.

Natalie Appleton is an award-winning Alberta writer living in Vernon, BC. She is a graduate of the University of Regina School of Journalism and the MA in  Creative Writing (Narrative non-fiction) program at City University London, UK. In her former life as a journalist, she worked at newspapers across the Prairies, including the Lethbridge Herald. Natalie recently won the Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Contest, and a short non-fiction story about Lethbridge's Leong family was longlisted for the 2016 CBC Creative Non-fiction Contest. Her stories have appeared in publications around the world, including The New York Times.
