Calgary Philharmonic Bassoonist Michael Hope makes his Music At Noon debut at the University of Lethbridge playing a 45-minute lunch hour recital with pianist Deanna Oye. Michael will delight with works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Aura Pon, Gershwin and Carl Maria von Weber.

Michael Hope joined the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982, and is one of Calgary’s most respected artists through his musicianship, and his dedication to the musical life of our community. In 2009, Michael was awarded the prestigious “Distinguished Calgarian Award” by The Native Calgarian Society for his community contributions.

Michael has a second career as a professional singer. He first gained international recognition as the winner of The Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival Rose bowl in 1984, and 1st prize winner in the 1988 CMC International Stepping Stones Competition. Since then he has appeared as a soloist with virtually every Canadian orchestra plus symphonies in the United States.

A distinguished recording artist, his CDs of inspirational songs, "Hallelujah" and “Amazing Grace”, have won a  Covenant Award Nominations for Classical/Traditional Album of the Year (2009) and Inspirational Album of the Year (2013). His Christmas CD, “Silent Night” made The Calgary Herald’s Top 10 Holiday CD list, and his other hits “What A Wonderful World”, “The Quintessential Cole Porter”, and “Bewitched” have also received critical acclaim.

A native of Toronto, Michael is a graduate of the prestigious Curtis Institute Of Music in Philadelphia. He enjoys watching hockey, repairing his old Toyotas, listening to Abba, and watching Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday nights with his Mom!
