Dr. Jérémie Bouchard (Hokkai Gakuen University, Sapporo, Japan) presents:

Investigating Native-Speakerism in the Japanese EFL Context from a Stratified Perspective.

Widespread consensus among academics and educators suggests that the Japanese EFL system has been struggling to adjust to recent trends in academic research and educational practice observed in other EFL nations. Beyond the teaching of English as a linguistic system, core pedagogical elements aimed at developing intercultural communicative competence among language learners – e.g. critical cultural awareness, regional knowledge, knowledge of other cultures, etc. – still occupy a marginal place in the Japanese EFL landscape. To explain this problematic alignment of Japanese EFL policy and practice with current international trends, researchers have begun to look into the ideological nature of EFL education in the country, thus placing greater emphasis on language criticality. Contained within this particular academic perspective, native-speakerism has gained greater analytical consideration. This presentation provides a stratified and ethnographically-based view into Japanese EFL education in secondary schools and investigates the presence and importance of native-speakerism at various strata of the Japanese EFL system (e.g. MEXT policy, EFL textbooks, classroom discourse and practice, and data collected from interviews and surveys).
