Japanese computer assisted language learning (CALL): Where are we now? Where do we need to go?

Monday, March 25, 2019

2 – 3 p.m. | D632

In the last decade, technological advancements have enabled a boom in the use of CALL for Japanese language learning. Current research (Zimmerman and McMeekin, 2019) shows how current directions are breaking new ground, moving beyond the drill-based behaviorist/structural approach of previous decades into areas of inquiry that focus on more integrative and even ecological approaches to technology use. This presentation reviews and critiques the last decade of Japanese CALL research using Warschauer and Healey’s (1998) progression of CALL stages; Behavioristic/structural, Communicative, Integrative, as well as the most recently identified ‘Ecological’ CALL stage. An overview of Japanese CALL research as it relates to these different CALL stages is presented and major findings on the effects of CALL on learning, teaching, and acquisition of the Japanese language are reviewed. Moreover, gaps in the research are identified and specific observations/suggestions for the direction of future Japanese CALL research are discussed.
