Piropos are a discourse practice part of a cultural tradition. They were a way of polite address from men to women in Spanish-speaking cultures that originated around the 19th century. But Piropos could be interpreted sometimes as sexist compliments. What we cannot forget is that what counts as a compliment may differ very much from one society to another.

Think about the following statements and if you are curious and interested in a discussion, you are welcome to attend this presentation.

  • Even Spanish speaking children know how to flirt.

  • Not only men give piropos.

  • Piropos are different from compliments.

  • Teaching piropos is a way of enhancing intercultural competence in the Spanish class-room.

  • There are metaphors in piropos… Let’s learn some of them.
