Harley Hotchkiss Memorial Lecturer - Dr. Kym Rae from the University of Newcastle

The Gomeroi gaayggal cohort uses a developmental origins of disease approach to follow Indigenous Australian women during their pregnancy and throughout the young lives of their children. This population suffers increased vulnerability to development of chronic disease in adulthood and efforts are being made to halt these statistics.

This presentation will draw on Australian history to highlight the past traumas of the population that have had far-reaching consequences. It will share current findings related to nutrition, obesity, renal function and mental health for mothers and their infants and areas of future research need. Additionally, the presentation will highlight the use of artistic and creative arts to build Indigenous self-identity, improve health literacy and support community engagement. The ArtsHealth programs offer unique and innovative approaches to health care delivery and youth engagement that are currently the focus of the Gomeroi gaaynggal team.
