Design Thinking Workshop

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

In this fast paced, hands-on workshop, participants will gain experience with the design process and design thinking (NO PREVIOUS DESIGN EXPERIENCE REQUIRED). They will be asked to use design principles to identify practical and innovative solutions to a problem. This will include having participants pair up to interview each other, identify real needs, and develop a solution for their partner. We’ll provide all the resources you will need to be successful, so just bring yourself and have fun!

Through this experience, we hope you will take away some of the basic principles and apply design thinking to solve challenges that you may face in school, work, and life.

This workshop is free, but limited to 14 students. Register today to save your spot!

More about Design Thinking

Design thinking is a problem-solving approach with the assumption that anything is possible! By viewing constraints as opportunities, we encourage participants to think broadly about problems, develop a deep understanding of end user needs, and appreciate the value in the contributions of others.

The design thinking process can be conceptualized to include three broad stages (i.e., opening, exploring, and closing) that are continually interacting to build-on and improve the last.

  1. Opening stage: available information is collected and considered, themes are developed, and a common language to describe the situation is established.
  2. Exploring stage: several hypotheses are generated and the best ideas are quickly tested through a method called prototyping.
  3. Closing stage: decisions and actions are taken based on the successful experiments. Failure and the rapid abandonment of ideas are integral to the process.
