Thanks to an excellent and rapid community response, the ceremony planned for the grand opening of the University of Lethbridge Centre for Sport and Wellness is officially sold out.

It’s been 40 years since the University of Lethbridge first opened its doors to the southern Alberta community. To celebrate this important milestone, we will officially launch our 40th anniversary celebrations at the grand opening of our new state-of-the-art Centre for Sport and Wellness.

We invite you to join us for an evening of entertainment and celebration on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the U of L’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Tickets are FREE and available on campus at the Office of University Advancement, Sport and Recreation Services, the University Bookstore and the Students’ Union Service Centre. We look forward to celebrating with you!

The University officially launches its 40th anniversary celebrations at the grand opening of the Centre for Sport and Wellness on Feb. 8, 2007, opening the door to a year of anniversary celebrations that will continue monthly throughout 2007.

“The opening allows the University to kick off its 40th year with a lasting gift to southern Alberta. The Centre is truly a community facility, and everyone is invited to come see the new building and enjoy an evening of celebration,” says Director of Communications Tanya Jacobson-Gundlock.

The evening of entertainment, recreation, reminiscence and recognition is in the tradition of an Olympics-style opening ceremony.

The Office of University Advancement and Sport and Recreation Services have produced a lineup that includes a wide variety of performances punctuated by informative features offering a historical perspective to the night.

Musical highlights include performances by legendary Canadian musician Ian Tyson, honorary degree recipient Susan Aglukark (DFA ’04), the U of L Steel Band and the University of Lethbridge Singers, who will offer up a tribute to Tyson.

Theatre and Dramatic Arts professor Nicholas Hanson has volunteered to choreograph the multi-faceted show. Representatives of various Sport and Recreation Services user groups will take to the stage in choreographed sequences that reflect the diverse program offerings, which include everything from ballroom dancing to aikido and climbing. Pronghorn athletics teams will also be recognized with historical vignettes and athlete introductions.

“The opening is a showcase for the many talented people in the community who use the Centre for Sport and Wellness,” says Jacobson-Gundlock.

New memories will be created as past victories are recalled. “A brand new Pronghorn mascot is going to be unveiled as an anniversary gift to the University,” says Promotions & Marketing Coordinator, Sport and Recreation Services, Sarah Faulkner.

Tickets will be available in January at no cost, with a limit of two tickets per person. Festivities get underway at 7 p.m. at the Centre for Sport and Wellness, but people are advised to arrive early to take advantage of the rush seating.

“The Centre for Sport and Wellness exists because of the collaboration between the city, university and students. The grand opening is a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate what we have accomplished over the past 40 years,” says Jacobson-Gundlock.
