Historic Lethbridge Week 2006 kicks off on Monday September 18 in Galt Gardens with a ceremonial Reading of a Riot Act, -- which originally took place on Christmas Day in 1907.
While organizers hope no riots will take place this year, there are numerous events to take in which show off Lethbridge's colourful past and how it links to the present and the future.
Hosted by several community organizations with an interest in promoting history, Historic Lethbridge Week has something for everyone -- kids, literature lovers, foodies, and movie, art and culture aficionados.
Among the many new activities is an old fashioned harvest supper, which takes place on Thursday, September 21 at the new Galt Museum and Archives. The hugely popular Taste of Downtown returns with new restaurants and entertainment options.
Complete information is outlined below.
Admission is free unless otherwise noted.
Doors Open Lethbridge takes place Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23. Twelve locations in the city are open for visitors to explore. Some are new, some are old, some are always 'open,' and all have interesting stories to tell.

Riot Act Reading
Galt Gardens Pergola
On Christmas Day, 1907 the Canadian Riot Act was read in Lethbridge by then Mayor W.S. Gailbraith. Today, Mayor Bob Tarleck and members of the Lethbridge City Police will reenact the reading to control the expected unruly mob.
Donation of Historic Police Journals
Library Director Liz Rossnagel will then present fourteen volumes of hand-written Lethbridge Police Force Daily Journals [“blotters”] dating to 1903-1910 to Greg Ellis, Archivist at the Galt Museum & Archives. These daily diaries of the Constable on Duty were one of the primary sources on which former Police Chief J.H. Carpenter based his history The Badge and the Blotter, published in 1975. Entries detail the criminal activity of Lethbridge at the turn of the twentieth century as well as other duties which befell policemen, such as fumigating houses, helping with accidents, enforcing Health Regulations and Liquor Laws. The blotters provide a fascinating snapshot of the comings and goings of Lethbridge in the early 1900s.
