University of Lethbridge Joins Universities Declining to Participate in Maclean’s Survey

August 14, 2006

On Aug. 14, the University of Lethbridge joined ten other major Canadian universities in declining Maclean's invitation to assist in this year's University Rankings exercise.

As a public institution, the University of Lethbridge devotes considerable resources every year to accountability and transparency, and will continue to do so. But as a research university, we are equally committed to the responsible use of data.

We and our peer universities object to Maclean’s misuse of data in establishing an artificial "ranking" table that is, at best, useless and, at worst, misleading to students wishing to make a thorough choice about the university they wish to attend.

A copy of a letter, signed by each of the universities, sent to Maclean’s is attached and explains these objections in detail.

Additional information on the ranking data which the University of Lethbridge supplies to Maclean’s is available at this website: http://www.uleth.ca/accountability

Information for prospective students is at http://www.uleth.ca/prospective

Sincerely,
Dr. Bill Cade, President and Vice-Chancellor

Attachment: August 14th letter to Maclean's.
