FROM THE MAY 2006 LEGEND
Graduates’ Work in Exhibition
Works by 14 graduating students comprise the Annual Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition in the U of L Main Gallery. The exhibition is open until June 2, when it closes with a 4 to 6 p.m. reception held in conjunction with the Convocation ceremonies for BFA students.
“The BFA exhibition gives graduating students the opportunity to select work that reflects their development during their degree studies and gives young artists the professional recognition of having their work installed in a public gallery,” explains Director/Curator, U of L Art Gallery, Dr. Josephine Mills. “Almost all of the graduating students have contributed work.” The work on exhibit is varied and includes drawing, photography, painting, sculpture and video. “That variety indicates the support within the Department of Art for encouraging students to explore and follow their own interests,” says Mills. Anna House is one of the artists whose work is in the exhibition. “I’ve learned so much about art and myself during my time at the University of Lethbridge,” says House. “I just love this place.”
Other students with work in the exhibition include Leah Adams, Dan Audet, Lindsay Farr, Brent Felzien, Katie Love, Sarah Mastel, Jennifer Mezei, Jason Mosher (BFA ’05), Shanell Papp, Jessica Robinson, Cayley Sorochan, Niki Standing, Hao Sun, Greg Thiessen, A.J. Thorne, Chelsea Wilson and Jessica Bjornson.
One-Act Drama Wins Regional Competition
A group of U of L fine arts students and alumni received the best play and best actress awards for Tales From the Hospital by Trevor Schmidt at the 2006 Regional One-Act Drama Festival in Lethbridge in March. The entire cast was recognized with the best actress award. The play is a tour of a hospital. The stories by two patients, a nurse and a laundry woman describe the painful effects of the Alberta Sterilization Act, which was enforced between 1927 and 1973. All the characters are composites of numerous real people. Congratulations to Director Sharon Peat (BASc/BEd ’82), alumni cast members Lindsay Meli (BFA ’04) and Candace Lewko (BFA/BEd ’95), student cast members Kari Musgrove, Jackie Peat, Ashley Thomson and Jazlyn Dow as well as Nicole Boschman. The students and alumni will compete in the Provincial One-Act Festival in Edmonton in May.
U of L Composer Wins
First-year music major Jesse Plessis won the Land’s End Composer’s Competition with his three-movement piece Ancient Festival for prepared piano, violin and cello. In addition to a cash prize, Plessis’s work was performed by the Land’s End Chamber Ensemble at a concert on April 23 in the Rozsa Centre at the University of Calgary. The performance will be broadcast on the CBC Radio Two program Our Music. He performs with Vox Musica, the U of L Steel band, the U of L Wind Ensemble (percussion) and the U of L Jazz Ensemble (piano) and takes piano studio and composes in his spare time.

U of L Students in National Choir
Michael Lowings, Peter Monaghan and Theo Tams have been selected for the National Youth Choir, which is part of the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors national conference in Victoria, BC, in May. “This is a real feather in our cap,” says Dr. George Evelyn, conductor of the U of L Singers. “Three of the four students selected to represent the province come from the U of L.” All three students are looking forward to the challenges and rewards of working with well-known conductor Richard Sparks of Pro Coro Canada. “There are only 40 members selected from across the country, so it is very exciting to be asked to join,” says Tams.
