Reappointment of Dean of Education

The Board of Governors of the University of Lethbridge has reappointed Dr. Jane O'Dea for a second five-year term as Dean of the Faculty of Education from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2010.

The Board's reappointment of Dean O'Dea is recognition of the significant accomplishments of the Faculty of Education during the Dean's first term. Dean O'Dea and her administrative team provided the outstanding leadership necessary for the Faculty to achieve these goals. Dean O'Dea's reappointment received strong support throughout the University community as well as from members of the profession in other universities and in government. The recommendation of her reappointment from the Dean of Education Appointment Committee was unanimous.

Dr. O'Dea joined the University in 1990, and assumed the position of Dean of the Faculty on July 1, 2000. Dr. O'Dea is an accomplished pianist and vocal coach who holds Undergraduate degrees in Music and Education from the National University of Ireland (1969 and 1970). At the University of Alberta, she completed her Masters degree in Education (Philosophy of Education, Aesthetics) 1983 and obtained her doctoral degree (Philosophy of Education, Aesthetics) in 1990.

Her award-winning teaching career spans more than 30 years and involves experiences in Canada, Ireland and England which include public school teaching, and teaching at graduate and undergraduate university levels. Dr. O'Dea received the University of Lethbridge Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995.

At the University of Lethbridge, Dr. O'Dea has maintained a significant teaching schedule while engaging in numerous research projects, presentations, Music recitals/performances and supervision of graduate students. She is the author of a book, entitled "Virtue or Virtuosity? Explorations in the Ethics of Music Performance" (Greenwood Press 2000) as well as "Life in the Hallways: Students' Perceptions of Violent and Disruptive Behavior in their Schools,” a study co-written with colleague Craig Loewen. Dr. O'Dea acted as coordinator of a tri-faculty project, which received a research grant from the Alberta Department of Advanced Education (now Alberta Learning). The study is included in a book entitled "Building Foundations for Safe and Caring Schools: Research on Disruptive Behaviour and Violence" (Duval House Publication, 1999).

As well, Dr. O'Dea has given more than 30 papers or presentations at conferences and to colleagues and published her research in refereed journals such as the Journal of the Philosophy of education and the British Journal of Aesthetics. In 2001 she was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Conference of the Philosophy of Education society of Great Britain in New College, Oxford, where she presented a paper entitled: “Youthful Violence and the Quest for Identity in a Media –Saturated Age: Unsettling Thoughts for Educators.”

Dr. O’Dea was given the Blackfoot name “Ninaimsskaakii” (Medicine Bundle Woman) by the Blood First Nations Community in 2002.
