The University of Lethbridge, located in southern Alberta, is currently seeking to fill the position for a Biosafety Officer (BSO). Reporting to the Director of Risk and Safety Services, this position will work closely with the University’s Laboratory, Chemical and Radiation Safety Officer , its Occupational Health & safety Officer and the current BSO.

Key responsibilities associated with this role include development, management and implementation of the University’s Biosafety Program; committee duties to the Biosafety and Joint Work Site Health & Safety Committee; provide daily oversight and expert advice to queries and concerns related to Biosafety; chemical and biological materials storage and inventory control; and biological waste management practices. The position will liaise closely with the Office of Research Services as well as be the primary contact for the Public Health Agency of Canada and other regulatory bodies concerning the University’s Biosafety program.

The successful incumbent should possess an accredited 4-year college/university curriculum degree in Microbiology (preferred), Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field with a strong background in biological sciences. Superior interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills, excellent written and oral skills and proficiency in computer skills is critical to the success of this position. Knowledge of current as well as new and evolving legislation including the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation and Code, the Human Pathogens & Toxins Act, the Public Health Agency of Canada Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations and the Controlled Goods Act is essential to this role. Previous experience as a Biosafety Officer in an academic and/or regulated work environment is preferred.
