HLSC 3850 Global Mental Health: China (inter-disciplinary course)
Global mental health is a new movement that has opened up global-local spaces of engagement to expand the capacity in mental health care. Whether western formulations of mental illness, treatment and personhood can suitably be applied to other cultural contexts is a topic of debate. With an interdisciplinary lens, we will examine how free market economy, individualism, migration, and inequities affect mental health and addiction. With China as a focus, we will explore mental health challenges in a country that has undergone rapid economic and social change. Cultural values and practices that have contributed to a people’s resilience despite foreign occupation, wars and revolution will be studied. This interdisciplinary inquiry consists of a theory component and a field study in China in 2014.
