Lessons from the Arrival City: The Future of Poverty,
Population and Environment in the Urban Landing Pad
An Evening with Doug Saunders
Doug Saunders, a Canadian born, world-renown journalist and author, comes to us from London, England where he has been the Globe and Mail’s European Bureau Chief.
His journalism won the National Newspaper Award on four occasions and he has received international recognition for investigative reporting on the state of the middle class around the world.
His most recent book, "The Myth of the Muslim Tide: Do Immigrants Threaten the West?" (2012), examines the reality of immigrants from Muslim countries as they assimilate into the West. As he documents their real lives, the myth that they are fundamentally different and pose a dangerous threat is debunked.
He draws haunting historical parallels showing how the same myths stuck to earlier groups, such as Jews and Roman Catholics. He challenges every conception and his work will become invaluable as society moves forward.
His award winning, "Arrival City: How the Largest Migration in History is Reshaping our World" (2011), in which he visited 20 locations on five continents to study the effects of the final wave of rural-urban migration on the cities of the world, was the winner of the Donner Prize along with being one of the five finalists for the 2011 Lionel Gelber Prize and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing. It has been called one of the most valuable and lucid works on public police published anywhere in years.
This special event is presented by the Prentice Institute, Friends of the Lethbridge Public Library, Southern Alberta Council of Public Affairs, and The University of Lethbridge.
