As President and chief ambassador of the U of L for ten years, Bill Cade oversaw significant institutional growth and diversification.
During his tenure as President, Bill Cade oversaw many significant initiatives: a rapid increase in enrolment at the U of L; significant growth in research; a diversification in graduate programming; the development of a Strategic Plan; the institution’s largest fundraising campaign; and an increase in the quality and quantity of teaching, learning, and research spaces.
Shortly after Dr. Cade became President, the U of L took its first steps towards becoming a comprehensive university, with the admittance of the first graduate students in the M.Sc. Management and Ph.D. Neuroscience programs.
Ph.D. program offerings expanded in 2004, with the approval of five doctoral programs in science. The U of L continued to grow student enrolment during Dr. Cade’s tenure as President, exceeding 8,000 by 2005.
Bill Cade emphasized the importance of strategic planning for the U of L. Under his guidance, a Strategic Planning Committee, with representatives from across the institution, produced two Strategic Plans.
These documents have been instrumental in guiding the U of L in its journey as a major comprehensive university.
A great ambassador for the U of L, Bill Cade strengthened community relations at the local, provincial, national, and international levels. A strong supporter of educational opportunities for the FMNI community, Dr. Cade was inducted into the Kainai chieftainship in 2006 and received the Kainai name "Chief Calf Shirt."
In honour of his committed and successful leadership of the institution, the University of Lethbridge is proud to confers upon William H. Cade the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
