Tams turns Idol into a personal showcase
Tams turns Idol into a personal showcase

September 19, 2008

In the end, it really was no contest.

University of Lethbridge student Theo Tams was consistently the top performer throughout the 2008 Canadian Idol competition and he was justly rewarded with the Idol title Sept. 10.

It took almost five million votes to put Tams over the top, as he became the sixth winner of the popular television event. Viewers of the competition saw Tams, a 23-year-old Coaldale/Lethbridge resident and U of L student (psychology/music) perform consistently to a point where he and Mitch MacDonald, a 22-year-old carpenter from Port Hood, NS were the last musicians standing.

Tams was in danger of being ousted from the Idol competition just once throughout the entire summer but he survived an appearance in the bottom three and never looked back.

Known for his strong, yet melodic voice, Tams made his mark on the show by taking some of music’s most well-known ballads and interpreting them with his own style. Judges and fans alike were impressed and it was almost a given that at the end of every week’s show, Tams was praised for putting in the evening’s best performance.

Tams’ signature effort in the series was his rendition of the Bryan Adams hit Heaven. He also impressed with his version of the Beatles’ ballad The Long and Winding Road.

During the final performance show, Tams made points with the judges by interpreting Jann Arden’s Good Mother.

The southern Alberta portion of the Sept. 10 finale broadcast was held on campus at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Approximately 1,000 screaming fans and family members watched the two-hour program and got to show their support for Tams through several on-air segments that were broadcast nationally on the CTV network.

Among the dignitaries in the enthusiastic crowd were U of L President Dr. Bill Cade, Lethbridge Mayor Bob Tarleck and many members of Tams’ extended Coaldale family.

Tams’ new single recording, “Sing”, was released the next day to radio stations and is currently available as an iTunes download.

Tams, MacDonald and third-place contestant Drew Wright are embarking on a national tour that stops in Lethbridge on Saturday, Nov. 29. Tickets for the show are available at the Enmax Centre box office by phone at 403-329-7328 or online at www.enmaxcentre.ca.
