Lethbridge, AB - The 2-0 Pronghorn Women's Soccer team continued their Canada West season this past weekend. On Saturday afternoon the Horns dropped a tough 3-1 decision to the University of Alberta Pandas, as Ashley Parker scored the lone Horns goal. The Horns rebounded Sunday with a strong 3-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. A slow start saw the Horns fall behind 1-0 early before Ashley Parker collected her team leading 6th goal of the season to even the score at one. Four minutes before half time Melissa Prokop put the Horns ahead 2-1 and then 2003 Canada West Second Team All-star, Barb Ariss put the game out of reach with 9 minutes remaining on a brilliant individual effort. Next Sunday the Women's Soccer team faces defending CIS and Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds.
The Men's Soccer team kicked off their Canada West season, facing the same two Canada West opponents. Saturday saw the Men drop a 4-1 decision to the defending CIS champion Golden Bears; Kevin Sawchuk scored the lone goal on a penalty kick. On Sunday afternoon, the Horns earned a 2-1 victory over the visiting U of S Huskies. First year midfielder Justin Tse opened the scoring 27 minutes into the contest and the Huskies tied the game in the first minute of the second half. After failing to convert on several good scoring chances, the Horns finally went ahead in the 71st minute, when freshman Ryan Conn finally beat the Huskies keeper. The Men's Soccer team only has one game next weekend, Sunday afternoon versus the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Men's Hockey team continued their preparations for the upcoming season with a trio of games. Tuesday Night they hosted the Flames Prospects. Shaun Norrie's goal with under six minutes remaining proved to be the winner in a 2-1 victory. Billy Katelnikoff pick up the other goal, while Jamie McCaig and Andy Houthuys split the duties between the pipes. On the weekend, the Men's hockey team traveled to Calgary for the SAIT Eye Opener tournament. Friday night saw the Horns crush the host SAIT Trojans 7-2, First year forward Kent Zirnhelt pick up two goals, while former Lethbridge Hurricane Blake Ward made 31 saves in the victory. Saturday afternoon had the Horns up against Mount Royal College Cougars. Shaun Norrie led the Horns with 2 goals in the 4-1 victory and transfer John Haggis made 39 saves to preserve the victory. The Men's hockey team continues their preseason this weekend in Saskatoon at the Huskie Classic Tournament.
