The GPA achieved by a student is determined by multiplying the grade points assigned to each grade by the weighting factor for the course. The total of all course grade points thus calculated is then divided by the total of the weighting factors for all courses.
Total points / total weighting factor = GPA
35.1/13.5 = 2.60 (GPA)
The quickest way to improve your GPA is to repeat courses with F grades. If you are struggling with your courses, consider going to the Student Success Centre for free tutoring or a meeting with a Learning Strategist.
For calendar years 2003/04 and later, the C- minimum grade requirement applies to STAT 1770, ECON 1010, ECON 1012, WRIT 1000 or a university English course, all Management courses, and all courses marked with an asterisk on your Program Planning Guide (PPG). For example, ECON 2750 in the Economics major requires a C-minimum grade.
You may repeat a course previously completed. The grade for each attempt will appear on your transcript, but the only the most recent grade will calculate into your GPA if you submit a Repeated Course Form through the Registrar's Office after registering for the course.
Courses with W (Withdrawal), or WC (Withdrawal with Cause) designations have not been completed and therefore are not considered to be repeated courses if registered in again.
Students with outstanding academic performance are recognized on the Dean’s Honour List. The list is compiled twice yearly at the end of the fall and spring semesters. There are 2 ways to qualify for the Dean’s Honour List:
- Students completing four or more graded courses in one semester must achieve a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on these courses, or
- Students completing 3 or fewer courses in one semester must achieve a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on these courses and must have a cumulative U of L GPA of 3.75 or higher AND must have completed a minimum of four graded courses at The University of Lethbridge, including those completed in the current semester.
Before initiating a grade appeal, you must have discussed the grade and how it was determined with the instructor(s). All grade appeals must be initiated by completion of a Final Grade Appeal form, which must be received and signed by the Associate Dean by the following dates immediately following completion of the course:
- Fall semester courses: 7 February
- Spring semester courses: 7 June
- Summer session courses: 7 October
You must explain why you believe the grade was improperly determined. The associate dean’s signature on the Final Grade Appeal form indicates that you have discussed the merits of the grade appeal with the Associate Dean, who is also charged with explaining the procedures connected with the grade appeal.
If you are interested in taking a course but are worried that if you do poorly, your grade point average (GPA) will suffer, credit/non-credit may be an option for you. It was designed to help you expand your academic horizons while protecting your GPA.
When you designate a course as credit/non-credit, you have essentially insured your GPA because you will not receive a letter grade in the course unless you earn a 'C' or better. If you earn a grade lower than a 'C' but still pass the course, a 'Cr' (Credit) will appear on your transcript. You retain credit from the course in your degree program but a 'Cr' does not affect your GPA. If you fail the course a 'NC' (No Credit) will appear on your transcrpt. This indicates that you did not receive credit for the course, but a 'NC' does not bring down your GPA.
The credit/non-credit option is not available for every course you will take.

You may designate a course as Credit/Non-Credit at the Registrar’s Office and Student Services (ROSS). There is a specific window of time toward the beginning of the semester in which you can designate a course as Credit/Non-Credit. Check Dates and Deadlines for the semester for the specific deadline.
Courses with a required C- minimum grade may not be designated as credit/non-credit. Please refer to your Program Planning Guide. Other limitations include the following:
- You cannot use Cr/NC for courses in your major.
- Only two courses per semester may be designated as Cr/NC.
- Depending on your program, there is a limit on the total number of Cr/NC designations you can use.
- To be eligible for undergraduate scholarships you must have completed a minimum of eight graded semester courses (24.0 credit hours). Courses that receive a “Cr” or “NC” designation are not counted toward this minimum.
- Students in transfer programs or who plan to further their schooling at other institutions should consider the Cr/NC option carefully. Other institutions may recognize “Cr” as “D” and “NC” as “F.”
You may elect to designate some courses as credit/non-credit. This alternative is designed to encourage students to expand their academic interests by taking courses outside their field of major interest. Credit/non-credit is not available to open studies students. The number of credit/non-credit courses a student can take varies.
