Liberal Education Tutors - Needed

The Liberal Education Program will be hiring several student Tutors for the Spring 2014 semester, for two different courses. Details on the courses and tutor positions are below. LBED 1000: Knowledge in Liberal Education - one tutor required.

Duties involve:

  • attending lectures (MW at 12:00 p.m.)
  • attending a weekly tutors meeting to plan for tutorials (time: TBA)
  • running the Friday tutorial for the course (12:00 – 12:50 p.m.) for a group of approximately 10 – 18 students
  • maintaining attendance and participation grades for your tutorial section.

Skills needed:

  • good writing skills; good people skills; ability to lead a discussion, engage the group of students, get them to talk and grapple with ideas, and model critical thinking for/with them.

Salary: There is a stipend of $1300 for the semester.

Note: there is also the possibility of doing an Independent or Applied Study in conjunction with the tutor position.

LBED 2850: The First Year Experience: Mapping our Communities - up to 2 tutors required

This is a new course (piloted last year under a slightly different name by Dr. Jan Newberry), which uses maps and mapping as a guiding metaphor to help students learn about the campus and surrounding area, and their new social and academic communities. Tutors will work with small groups (6 to 10) of students on their weekly assignments and final project, which is to make a multi-media map of the campus.

Duties involve:

  • attending all lectures (MWF, 2:00 - 2:50 pm)
  • helping in class sessions, especially working sessions on mapping exercises
  • guiding teams in their final projects, with advice, resolution of any team conflicts, etc.
  • some grading of weekly assignments.

Skills needed:

  • again, good writing skills, good people skills, ability to manage a team and help team members work together well.

Salary: There is a stipend of $1300 for the semester.
