Music at Noon Series: Jianpeng Feng, percussion (China Conservatory of Music)

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 12:15 p.m., W570, Recital Hall

Feng is an active percussionist who has performed throughout China and abroad. This concert features authentic Chinese percussion and how it is transposed to western composition.

Conversation in the Arts

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1 to 3 p.m., W480, University Centre for the Arts

In this session, Leanne Elias from the Department of New Media will talk about the work taking place in the Fine Arts Data Visualization and Physicalization Lab on campus. Then Dr. D. Andrew Stewart from the Department of Music will explore a new musical composition that integrates the string quartet and innovative music technologies.

The Institute for Child and Youth Studies and the Centre for Culture and Community are sponsoring two public talks by Dr. Gabe Rosenberg:

Youth as Infrastructure: 4-H and the Intimate State in Rural America

How Meat changed Sex: Intimacy with Animals After Industrial Reproduction Wednesday, Jan. 25, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., L1060, Library

In his first presentation, Rosenberg, a professor in the Program in Women’s Studies at Duke University, will talk about the history and purpose behind the 4-H club. In his second presentation, he will discuss how dramatic transformations of the food system are actively reformatting human sexual classification systems, practices and identities.

Dyck returns as a cartoonist-in-residence to celebrate the U of L’s 50th anniversary.

PUBlic Professor Series: Dr. Janay Nugent

Thursday, Jan. 26, 7 to 9 p.m., City Hall Atrium

In her talk, titled Converting a Nation: family, religion, and Calvinism in 16th and 17th Scotland, Nugent will look at the various techniques used to convert the minds and hearts of a nation. In 1560, the Scottish Parliament adopted the Scots Confession, a religious document that effectively committed to converting the religion of the entire nation.

This annual fundraising event from the Faculty of Fine Arts brings an evening filled with original art, exciting performances and a gourmet meal. To help celebrate the U of L’s 50th anniversary, this year’s event features a live auction of a few select pieces.
