The exchange agreement

The exchange agreement between the University of Lethbridge and the University of Beira Interior was signed in April 2014.

Fall semester: September - mid-February (20 weeks)

Spring semester: mid-February - mid-July (20 weeks)

The country

Portugal is located in South-Western Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula and it is the westernmost country of mainland Europe being bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the West and South and by Spain to the North and East. The country is named after its second largest city, Porto, whose name derives from Latin "Portus" and Celtic "Cale".

Portugal is considered a developed country with an advanced economy and high living standards. It's one of the world's most globalized and peaceful nations.

The city

Covilhã is located in the central region, 300 km (186 mi) Northeast of Lisbon, Portugal's capital. Towers between 450 and 800 meters above the sea level, thus the mountain landscape is ever present. The climate in Covilhã is Mediterranean, moderately cold in the winter and relatively warm in the summer. There is the Vodafone Ski Resort, the only ski resort in Portugal, 20 km away from the city, actually in the neighboring municipality of Seia.

The city was an important textile center, once known as the "Portuguese Manchester". Over the last decades the city witnessed a restructuring of this industry. However, many factories were not able to meet the requirements of the global market and had to close down. Some of their former buildings, after being renovated by the University of Beira Interior, are started the 21st century serving the noble purpose of educating the Portuguese society.

About the university

UNIVERSIDADE DE BEIRA INTERIOR was created in 1979 and has more than 7,000 students distributed across a multiplicity of graduation courses, awarding academic degree in fields ranging from medicine to aeronautical engineering and mathematics.

The university campus is well integrated in the city urban network and it has unique characteristics based on Covilhã industrial roots.

Housing

The UBI maintains 7 residence halls. All the rooms are equipped with closets, desks, chairs, beds and central heating. One or two students are assigned to each room. The Students' Social Affairs Centre manages all the university housing offers.

Cost of Living

The University promotes low prices for its students, for accommodation, meals and health. The price for University accommodation it is around 100 €/month and the price for meals it is about 150 € per month in University canteens.

Visa requirements

Students are required to apply for a study visa - Schengen Visa Type D - prior to leaving. Applications should be made at your nearest Portuguese Embassy or Consulate.
