Spatial Data by Geography - World

Atlas of Living Australia
Australian Government
The Atlas of Living Australia (Atlas) contains information on all the known species in Australia aggregated from a wide range of data providers: museums, herbaria, community groups, government departments, individuals and universities.

GADM Database of Global Admistrative Areas
This database is a global collaborative effort to construct a database of the world's administrative boundaries (e.g. Countries, Provinces, Counties). GADM maps 116,996 administrative boundaries areas in Shapefile or ESRI geodatabase formats.

Unxos GmbH, Switzerland
A worldwide geographical database with a search function, browsable maps, and downloadable data files available free under a Creative Commons attribution license. Users may manually edit, correct and add new names using a user friendly wiki interface. Includes postal codes.

GIS Data Depot Portal
GIS Data Depot Portal allows users to search for data for most countries in the world. GISDataDepot users are required to have a GeoCommunity account. Many data types of data (DEM, NWI, DLG, LU/LC, and TIGER) are available for free download (Green icon). Most other data products (DRG, DOQ, DOQQ, FEMA) will require account holders to purchase data "blocks" for a nominal fee using their account.

GLIMS (Global Land Ice Measurements from Space) Glacier Database
National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)
This a project designed to monitor the world's glaciers primarily using data from optical satellite instruments, such as ASTER.

Harmonized World Soils Database (HWSD)
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis
The HWSD is a 30 arc-second raster database with over 16,000 different soil mapping units that combines existing regional and national updates of soil information worldwide (SOTER, ESD, Soil Map of China, WISE) with the information contained within the 1:5,000,000 scale FAO-UNESCO Soil Map of the World (FAO, 19711981). Supplementary data includes Soil Quality, Land Cover and Terrain Data.

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC)
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is one of several discipline-specific data centers within the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). Includes the Warehouse Inventory Search Tool (WIST), USGS Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis), LP DAAC Data Pool, MODIS Reprojection Tool on the Web (MRTWeb), Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC) and ASTER Tasking.

NatureServe GIS Data
An online non-profit conservation organization representing an international network of biological inventories in the western hemisphere (All 50 U.S States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean). This website serves as a portal for accessing several types of publicly available biodiversity data and reliable scientific information about plants, animals, and ecosystems.

Publishing Network for Geoscientific and Environmental Data
The information system PANGAEA is operated as an Open Access library aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing georeferenced data from earth system research. The system guarantees long-term availability of its content through a commitment of the operating institutions. Most of the data are freely available and can be used by referencing the related publication or the dataset citation. A few password protected data sets are under moratorium from ongoing projects. The description of each data set is always visible and includes the principle investigator (PI) to ask for access. PANGAEA is a designated archive for the journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD).
