Galt Museum & Archives
PURPOSE
The Galt Museum & Archives collects, preserves and makes accessible through research and interpretation, the human history of Lethbridge and southern Alberta. The artifact holdings number over 20,000 objects. The Archives holdings include 300,000 photographic items; 400 linear feet of manuscript material; 20,000 books and publications; 1,500 recordings (audio tapes, films, videotapes, CDs and DVDs), about 3,000 maps and drawings, etc. These collections continue to grow. Some histories included in the collection are:
- Southern Alberta communities
- Works by early explorers and travellers such as Palliser and Macoun
- Native history and culture
- Royal Canadian Mounted Police
- Agriculture and ranching
- Political and economic history
RESOURCES:
- Books and other publications on community histories and topical histories
- Privately donated records which provide information on agriculture, the performing and visual arts, coal mining, community clubs and societies, regional planning, etc.
- Government and Government Agency Records
- Primary sources such as school textbooks, technical manuals, medical texts and reports by early explorers and travelers
- Films, negatives, photographs, slides and videos
- Maps and technical drawings
- Audio recordings
- Newspaper collections and clipping files (local newspapers on microfilm e.g. Lethbridge Herald, Fort Benton Record, Raymond Newspaper, etc.)
- Special collections - Galt Medical Collection, The Kogawa Collection, The Hagell Collection
SERVICES
- Open to the public
- Reference assistance
- Photocopying service
- Large scale copying of maps and drawings
- Copying of audio tapes, films and videotapes
- Research (for those unable to come to the Archives) - fee for service basis
- Electronic scanning of archive items into digitial images
- Borrowing privileges for slide collections only
