Dr. William and Dorothy Beckel

January 19, 2007 - April 30, 2007

The University Library is pleased to acknowledge the valuable gift of William and Dorothy Beckel, a collection of books, serials and ephemera with a strong historical focus on western and northern Canadian art. When the Beckels donated the collection in the fall of 2004, an agreement was made to have any materials already held by the University Library donated to the library of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. With this valuable donation, Dorothy Beckel was able to make a significant difference to two institutions with whom she had a positive connection. Dr. and Mrs. Beckel were residents of Lethbridge from 1968 to 1979, during which time they contributed greatly to their community. Dr. Beckel served as Vice-President (Academic) from 1968 to 1972 and President of the University of Lethbridge from 1972 to 1979. Dorothy Beckel was a founding member of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Board and, in the words of Marilyn Smith, director of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG)... "was instrumental in setting the vision for the gallery." The Beckels presently reside in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
