Early in August, nearly six weeks before the Nez Perce arrived in central Montana, Lieutenant Gustavus Doane had been ordered to Judith Gap to burn grass and drive the game away in preparation for the arrival of the Nez Perce. This hardy veteran of the first Yellowstone expeditions was intimately familiar with this country.
Leaving here with a hundred Crow scouts on August 21, Doane moved to Fort Ellis at Bozeman. While proceeding into Yellowstone Park, his detachment surprised a Nez Perce raiding party. near today's Corwin Springs. |
