Fort Skalkaho

Fire struck the Bitteroot in 2000

Nicknamed Fort Run for the speed of the local citizenry in getting inside its walls, the five-foot-high earth embankment called Fort Skalkaho provided minimal protection for the small settlement of Skalkaho. The sloping walls could easily have been ridden over in case of attack.

From fewer than eighty residents in 1877, the town, now called Hamilton, has grown into the largest town in the Bitterroot Valley today, with a population of almost three thousand.
