Walsh told the Nez Perce that the North-West Mounted Police could offer them protection only as long as they stayed in Canada. Nevertheless, shortly thereafter, a few Nez Perce returned to the Bear's Paw.

The Nez Perces who went to Sitting Bull's camp are now for the second time on the old battle field near Bear's Paw mountain and have Sitting Bull and some of his Indians with them. They go after some supplies of ammunition, sugar, tobacco, etc., which they had concealed there after the war.
