Herring Gone — Bears Remain

June 26, 2008 — Yuzhnaya Glybokaya Bay / Lavrova Bay, Russia

In the morning we anchored at Yuzhnaya Glybokaya Bay and began our exploration. This glacial fjord is part of the Koryakskiy Preserve and there is an abandoned herring packing factory. Between 1932 and 1934 the Russian government established this factory in order to send as much fish as possible to central Russia. By 1965 there was no herring left and the factory had to close down. We walked around the residences for the factory. They had not weathered well.

After lunch we disembarked again exploring Lavrova Bay looking for bears. Very few expedition ships visit this remote Koryak preserve. It turned out to be rich area for the Brown (Grizzly) Bear. Later, we checked out another abandoned Herring station where we saw lots of bear tracks.
A Russian factory ship ran aground and died as has the herring industry here.

In the evening John Harwood led a sing-a-long as we drank Irish Coffee.
