JSTOR's Institution Finder is a login service that directs off-campus users to a proxy login page for authentication when they find JSTOR content on the web. A growing number of end-users are finding content from a variety of places including Google, Google Scholar and Wikipedia and coming directly to JSTOR, unauthenticated. The Institution Finder is designed to return the end-user to the exact JSTOR page they started on, most often a specific article, rather than the home page or a search page. Institution Finder was created to lessen user confusion, and facilitate seamless authentication through your library proxy in a minimal number of steps.
Here's a quick explanation of how it works:
1. A University of Lethbridge user arrives on a JSTOR article page from a Google search or other referring page
2. An on-campus user will get automatic access to the full-text, but users outside of the University of Lethbridge IP range will be denied access
3. When denied access to the full-text, the user is presented with some options for accessing JSTOR including a link to the JSTOR login page and the Institution Finder
4. From there they can search for their institution and follow a link to the University of Lethbridge proxy login page
5. After logging in they are authenticated to JSTOR and will be automatically redirected to the original full-text article

CanGeoRef references are drawn from GeoRef with additions supplied by the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences from four "pilot provinces" (Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba & Newfoundland/Labrador) - Alberta and Manitoba have already been completed and work has begun on Ontario. The references cite the journal literature, meeting proceedings, abstracts, books, reports, theses and maps. Documents in CanGeoRef are primarily related to geology. An important addition to CanGeoRef is the Mineral Assessment Reports (these are complete for Alberta, to be followed by those of other jurisdictions in a later phase).
Indexing is based on the controlled vocabulary found in the print GeoRef Thesaurus and the systematic vocabulary terms are available online as hierarchical lists (see this webpage also for a link to the "GeoRef Serials List"). Specific geographic locations are listed as place names, and, for principal locations, latitude and longitude are provided.

The University of Lethbridge licence with Access
Copyright expired on December 31, 2010, and due to changes initiated by
Access Copyright, it will not be renewed.
Effective January 1, 2011, instructors will no longer be able to
print classroom handouts, have course packs created, or post articles on
the learning management system without checking the copyright
information on each of the articles they wish
to use.
In an effort to assist with this process the Library has developed a
online tool that will allow instructors to verify copyright information
for electronic journals by searching for the journal title.
The tool will be made available through the Library website on the Copyright Guidelines and Services for Faculty and Instructors pages.

Freedom to Read Week, Feb. 21 - Feb. 27, "encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms."
"Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Books are removed from the shelves in Canadian libraries, schools and bookstores every day. Free speech on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read." (Freedom to Read website)
Please check out any that interest you! For more information on our display, check out our Freedom to Read Displays webpage.

Linda Many Guns, a Native American Studies faculty member, and Pat Breaker, a Graduate student, collaborated with the Library to create our newest display which showcases Linda's personal collection of beads and native clothing/artifacts.
"The display provides a brief glimpse at how Blackfoot people enjoyed and welcomed trade goods. Trade cloth replaced animals hides; although not as durable, their colours were highly appreciated. In this display we see how the bead production in Europe went through three significant phases as the glass bead industry matured. The larger beads and the long beads are the oldest with the pony beads arriving around the mid 1800's and finally the tiny seed beads were produced by the late 1800's. As the beads made their way into Blackfoot culture they too were welcome additions to be added to the clothing or used to decorate gun holders, par fleche and other utensils." (Linda Many Guns)
More information is available on our current general display webpage
This display is a must see so hopefully you'll find time to view it in the Library entrance!

The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce that we're offering access to a new database, Global Health, on a TRIAL basis.
Global Health indexes a wide range of material including journal articles, conference proceedings, theses, book chapters, and government reports bringing together a broad spectrum of unique resources not found in other research products. Subject coverage includes international health, biomedical life sciences, non-communicable diseases, public health nutrition, food safety and hygiene, occupational health, toxicology, health services, and maternal/child health. Based in the UK, Global Health offers international coverage of both the developing and developed world with publications from over 150 countries and material in over 50 languages translated into English.
Global Health is on trial until 2009 March 27 and is available through the library’s indexes/databases webpage. Please note that this is a trial and as such, some functionality you are used to seeing in our databases (e.g. the Find Full Text button) is not available for the trial version. This WILL be turned on with any subscription we embark on.
You will also notice that there are two links: one via CABI and one via EBSCO. CABI is the native producer of the database and they have their own interface which we can choose or we can choose to access the same content through EBSCO. The trial setup through CABI gives us access to the archived backfiles, indexing materials from 1910 to present, whereas the EBSCO link currently only provides access to materials from 1973 to present. If we choose to purchase this database, the backfiles will be available through EBSCO as well.
Please test them both out - let us know what you think about the content, coverage, and features of the database and let us know what you like or dislike about the CABI or EBSCO interfaces.
Please submit feedback by 2009 March 28 by completing our Database Trial Evaluation form.

The theme for International Women's Day on March 8, 2008 is Strong Women, Strong World. Hopefully you'll have time to come into the Library, look over the materials and check out any titles that interest you.
"In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace. Following the United Nations' lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women's Day.
Every year since 1977, Canadians have marked International Women's Day by celebrating progress toward women's full participation, reflecting on the challenges and barriers that remain, and considering future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives. International Women's Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the collective power of women - past, present and future" (Status of Women Canada website).

Some Library services will be unavailable the morning of Good Friday.
To improve security when accessing information in Your Library Record, the University Library is working out the details of introducing a new PIN requirement (in addition to Your Name and Campus ID#) when you:
The morning of April 6 (Good Friday, 8am to noon), please be aware that we will be testing the Library system's PIN requirement. We advise you to avoid trying to use all Library online services involving the above-listed functions that morning while testing is occurring, as system behaviour will be variable and some functions will not be accessible.
When PIN testing concludes April 6 at noon, all patron login functions will return to normal. We will post notices of any further PIN testing that may be necessary, as well as the date on which the new PIN requirement is turned on (this date has not yet been determined).
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Rumi Graham (329-2179) grahry@uleth.ca

The Library's "How-to Guides" have been divided into two separate categories:
1. Research Guides
2. Writing Guides
These, along with our "Subject Guides" and "Class Guides," can be found from the Library's homepage in numerous ways:
RESEARCH HELP (centre block on Library's Homepage) - offers complete list as well as list of types of guides http://www.uleth.ca/lib/guides/
Library Homepage > RESOURCES > RESEARCH HELP - guides by type
Library Homepage > HELP > Guides - guides by type
* Whichever way you access the Guides, you will see that we have maintained an additional separate link to our most used guide "Citing Sources".
We will also be adding a fifth category of guides which will most likely be called "Technology / Equipment Guides" or something similar.
So what is the difference between all these types of guides?
RESEARCH GUIDES:
- provide help with all aspects of finding and evaluating information
- general in nature
WRITING GUIDES:
- provide help at all stages of the academic writing process
- offer help with grammar, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism etc.
SUBJECT GUIDES:
- provide selective lists of resources in specific subject areas
- provide advice on finding and using information in these areas (eg. Music Scores, Company Info., Genealogy, Philosophy)
CLASS GUIDES:
- developed for specific classes or groups of students working on a specific assignment
- often an adjunct to an information literacy session given by one of the Librarians and may only be available for the period of time before the assignment is due or while the course is offered (at the
discretion of the Librarian who developed the guide).
TECHNOLOGY / EQUIPMENT GUIDES:
- provide help with things like "burning a CD" or "connecting to a database from off-campus"

In early May Library staff will begin a project to clean the book collection shelves on Levels 9 and Level 10 (north). Please be aware that the project involves the use of vacuum cleaners, so nearby study areas will be rather noisy. We apologize in advance for the disruption, and will endeavour to complete the project as quickly as we can.

From February 28 to March 18, the University Library will be surveying a random selection of faculty, students and staff on their perceptions of library service quality. If you are among those chosen to complete this survey, then please take 10-15 minutes to give us your input.
Your participation is important to building a better Library and a better University. And, if that is not incentive enough, participants may choose to submit their email address for inclusion in a random draw for one of five $100 gift certificates from the UofL Bookstore!
All responses are strictly confidential; only aggregated data will be reported. For further information, please check out:
