According to recent news reports the online Sony PlayStation services experienced a severe interruption in services over the last few days due to a distributed denial of service attack(DDOS) on its servers. This would affect common online games such as
- Battle.net (World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, Diablo III)
- EVE Online
- League of Legends
- PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment
There was no apparent loss of data from this attack, and Sony was able to get the services back online as of Monday Aug 25, 2014
DDOS attacks are becoming more common in the internet, and you need to take steps to ensure your computer is not taking part in these kinds of activities (whether intentional or unintentional). A DDOS attack is illegal and could result in criminal charges being brought against the owner of a system who was taking part in an attack. To remediate the risk of your being involved, make sure you have a good antivirus/antimalware software solution installed on your systems. Do not download common DDOS tools such as Low Ion Orbit Cannon as you could be opening yourself up to abuse.
