Privacy and Legal Services Advisor
The University of Lethbridge invites qualified applications for the position of Privacy & Legal Services Advisor. Reporting to the University General Counsel, the Privacy & Legal Services Advisor will provide strategic and operational leadership and direction to the University on access and privacy matters; will administer the University's conflict of interest program; and will provide general legal services to the Office of General Counsel.
The position provides advice and education to the University on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Alberta) and other relevant privacy-related legislation, and is responsible for managing FOIP requests and ensuring the institution's compliance with privacy laws. This position is also responsible for administering the University conflict of interest program, conducting legal research, reviewing legislation relevant to the University, reviewing contracts, and developing legal documents and agreements.
DUTIES:
- Development and delivery of a comprehensive privacy education program
- Development and implementation of a comprehensive program for compliance
with privacy laws applicable to the University
- Provide operational direction and advise to the University on privacy
issues
- Develop and advise on University policies, procedures and guidelines
related to privacy
- Review agreements and third party contracts and advise on privacy
law implications
- Manage FOIP information access processes including appropriately
exercising rights provided through legislation
- Administer and manage the University's conflict of interest program
- Conduct legal research; appropriately analyze tribunal decisions
and caselaw
- Review and develop legal documents for the University Office of
General Counsel
- Review policies and legislation relevant to the University
- Remain current on legislation and case law relevant to the University
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree, with advanced degree and professional
designation in a relevant field preferred, along with at least three
years' experience in a related field (including law, information management,
privacy coordination, etc.)
- Knowledge of and experience with FOIP and similar privacy legislation
is essential
- Progressive experience in conducting and analyzing legal research
- Candidates must have strong background in reviewing and drafting
legal documents and agreements
- The successful candidate should have excellent communication and
interpersonal skills; excel at problem solving, have highly developed
analytical skills, and possess the ability to work under pressure
with multiple deadlines
- A high degree of self-direction and independence is required
