Get Involved

Become Involved

There are several ways to become involved with residence life and ORS. Each different approach offers a different set of challenges and rewards for residents as they spend their time here in Lethbridge. ORS actively encourages resident participation in all of these ways:

Floor Meetings:
Every month your RA will hold a meeting to gather information about any ideas, problems, or opinions that you may have and he or she will address them to the best of their ability. However, the only way your RA can find out what you want, need, or think is if you attend your monthly Floor Meeting. Most Floor Meetings occur during the evening and they will be filled with useful information about upcoming events on campus and in residence, or about possible concerns that a section or floor should be made aware of. Please make an effort to attend every Floor Meeting because they are a great link between you and your RA.

Floor Events:
Every month, an event will be held for your floor or section. Your RA will have invested ORS funds to hold some kind of exciting and entertaining event, and often these events will be announced at the monthly Floor Meetings (so make sure you attend them). They can also involve more than one floor or section, so Floor Events are a great way to meet new people living in residence. The key to Floor Events is that in order for them to occur, you need to attend. Of course no one wants to go to a boring event so if you think you have a great idea for a Floor Event, run it past your RA! We would love to hear about a great spot you know in Lethbridge where residents can go and enjoy themselves, so please, let us host a floor event that you will want to go to.

Residence & Facility Wide Events:
Think “Floor Event” only on a much larger scale! Trips to Calgary Roughneck’s games, Slip-n-Slide races down the Breezeway, and maybe even a big name concert held in the Zoo. All of these things have been done in the past and these events can fill up quick so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. There will be 3 Residence Wide Events each term and they will all be a great chance to experience locations outside of residence. And once again, if you have an amazing idea that you think could be a great event, please let anyone on ORS know. Since these events do take a bit of time to co-ordinate, the more time we have to think and plan, the more likely it is that we can make your idea happen.

Cabarets:
The high-light of ORS events! Cabs are a great way to get out of residence and have a fantastic night. Cabs are held on a monthly basis and occur during the evening either on or close to the weekend. Each Cab will also have a different theme, so dig out the costumes and dress up. Cabs also allow you to bring an off-campus guest to the University to see just how much fun it is to be a resident here at the University of Lethbridge. Your RA will have tickets for sale, but there is a limited supply so get them quickly. While each Cab is exciting, by far, the year opener and Christmas Cab are the most popular events of the year.

Committees:
There are 4 committees that ORS manages and runs, and these committees play a key role in the way that residents spend their stay here on campus. While social events are a very important part of Residence Life, we are all students and citizens as well. These 4 committees attempt to branch out into different areas of Residence Life, and they are:

  • Academic
  • Health & Wellness
  • Communications
  • Family Liaison
  • Cabaret

On these committees we are looking for student representation and contribution. To find out more about the committees, their duties, and what is involved if you would like to be an active participant, please contact any ORS member (RA, VP, or President).

ORS:
ORS is an extremely rewarding organization. It offers great opportunities for those who really enjoy residence and want to make it a better place for all students. Each year, a new Executive (VP University Hall, VP Aperture Park, and ORS President) is elected via the students living in residence that year. In order to run for one of these positions, you must be in good standing with ORS and you must have served at least one full term on the Residence Council. These positions offer the most opportunities when it comes to really shaping how residence at the University of Lethbridge is run, but at the same time they require the most time.

Once the New Executive has been elected, they will, assist the Associate Director of Housing Services, in hiring the new Residence Council Members for the following year. This means that each year, if you are really interested in ORS there is a chance to be hired on as part of next year's Residence Council as either an RA or a Business Representative. All of the information regarding how to actually apply to be an RA or Business Representative will be made available to you via your RA during the second term, when it is most applicable. However, one thing to remember is that the people who will be hiring the Residence Council Members for next year will most likely be RA’s from this year’s Residence Council. So, in other words, get to know the RA’s because we will want to get to know you to make the best choice when it comes time to hire people.
