Saskatoon, SK, -Three University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored double digits in a 67-54 win over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
All-Canadians Lindsay DeGroot and Kim Tulloch led the Huskies with 21 and 17 points each respectively. Fifth-year Alicia Wilson netted another 15 for her team. The three also led in rebounds – Wilson had eight, followed by DeGroot and Tulloch with six a piece.
With the win, the No. 5 ranked Huskies move to 12-6 on the season. The loss drops Lethbridge to 7-12. A night earlier, the Huskies won 80-68. The win clinched the Huskies a spot in the postseason.
Battling back-and-forth for the first few minutes of the first quarter, it was Lethbridge who carried a lead throughout the majority of the frame. A Sam Hornquist jumper put the ‘Horns ahead at 15-13. Lethbridge would score four more points before DeGroot found the basket at the end of the quarter. The Pronghorns led 19-15 heading into the second.
In the second quarter, DeGroot tied the game at 23 with a three-point shot from the top of the arc with six minutes left in the first half. Lethbridge continued to score netting the next five points before DeGroot added a layup from under the basket. The Huskies took the lead at 29-28 with 1:13 left they continued to move to the 31-28 mark. From there the Huskies took over the game and led 36-28 heading into halftime. The Huskies held the ‘Horns to just nine points in the second quarter.
Although Price opened the scoring for the Pronghorns in the second half, the Huskies continued to answer the Pronghorns points to maintain their lead. Lethbridge continued to try and play catchup in the frame but could never get a good run going. Even with the Pronghorns scoring just two less baskets in the quarter, the Huskies finished the third quarter up 10 points at 51-41. It was a similar story in the fourth quarter. The Pronghorns continued to put the ball in the net but could never catch up even to regain the lead.
The Huskies will face provincial foe the University of Regina Cougars next weekend in a home-and-home series to wrap up the regular season. The teams will be in Saskatoon Saturday. Tip off is at 6 p.m. The Pronghorns return home to host the University of Calgary Dinos next Saturday night.
