MBBALL - Huskies Comback to Clip Horns

Release Date:
February 6, 2010

SOURCE: U of S Sports Information

Saskatoon, SK - A three-point play by Nolan Brudehl started the University of Saskatchewan Huskies toward their 97-84 victory over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Huskies were down 64-62. Lethbridge continued to hang on to the lead throughout the first half of the final frame. The Huskies started to put on the pressure and brought the game to a 77 tie. With just under four minutes left, Brudehl went up for the layup under the basket and was fouled by Pronghorn Danhue Lawrence. Brudehl’s basket counted and he hit the free throw to put his team up 80-77. From that point on the Huskies never looked back and the ‘Horns couldn’t regain the lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Huskies outscored the Pronghorns by 15 at 35-20. Canada West leading scorer Showron Glover ran the quarter scoring 20 points for the Huskies including three three-pointers.

With the win the Huskies move to 12-6 on the season and sit in second place in the Canada West Prairie Division. The Huskies need just one more win to clinch their first home playoff date since 2006-07. The win also puts the Huskies on a four game winning streak. A night earlier, the Huskies defeated the Pronghorns 107-61. Lethbridge drops to 9-10 and out of the final playoff spot with one game remaining in their regular season schedule.

Lethbridge had the lead from the first minutes of the game jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Fifth-year Huskie Clint Unsworth answered to get the Huskies tied at five. From there the teams answered each other point-for-point with every trip down the court. The first quarter ended with Lethbridge up 24-22.

The Pronghorns were the first to score in the second quarter but the Huskies were able to keep the game close allowing Lethbridge to get ahead no more than four points. The game was at a tie seven times in the second quarter and finished notched at 41. Once again the teams continued to play close in the third frame with Lethbridge scoring just two points more at 23-21.

Saskatchewan shot 48.4% in the game, while the ‘Horns finished at 50%. The Huskies beat Lethbridge on the boards rebounding 36 times in the game. The key to the ‘Horns success early in the game was stopping Glover from scoring. He had just three points in the first quarter and nine at halftime.

Glover finished with a game-high 32 points – 23 of those scored in the second half. Three more Huskies were in double digits – Troy Gottselig finished with 18, followed by Brudehl with 13 and Michael Linklater with 11. Brudehl had a game high nine rebounds.

Lawrence led the Pronghorns with 29 points in the game, hitting five three-point shots. Randy Davis added 17 for Lethbridge and Jeff Price netted 15. Remington Stemler had a team-high six rebounds.

The Huskies will face provincial foe the University of Regina Cougars next weekend in a home-and-home series to wrap up the regular season. The teams will be in Saskatoon Saturday. Tip off is at 8 p.m. The Pronghorns return home to host the University of Calgary Dinos next Saturday.
