Job Title: Junior Trade Policy Analyst
Number of Positions: 3-4 student positions(TBC)
Work Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Length of term: May 1 - August 30, 2013, full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
Salary: $17.66 to $20.58/h (based on Treasury Board Secretariat guidelines)

Mandate:

The Trade Policy and Negotiations Branch is responsible for leading and coordinating government-wide efforts to negotiate free trade agreements (FTAs), coordinating the implementation and management of existing FTAs, as well as the overall management of multilateral agreements at the World Trade Organization.

Job Description:

Reporting to either a Deputy Director or a Senior Officer, the Junior Trade Policy Analyst will deal primarily with the coordination and preparation of free trade agreement and multilateral negotiations. Specific elements of the proposed work description (which are subject to change, depending on operational requirements) include:

  • supporting Canadian participation in international meetings/negotiations by contributing to research and analysis, as well as by providing assistance in the preparation of briefing notes, reports and other documents;
  • assisting in consultations with other Government of Canada Departments and agencies;
  • contributing to the preparation of Ministerial Question Period notes, Ministerial correspondence, communication products and other documents; and
  • contributing to special projects related to the above and other files as required.

The work in the Trade Policy and Negotiations Division will provide the candidate with valuable experience in working with multiple Departments within the Government of Canada, Canadian Embassies and Consulates abroad, provincial trade representatives and industry stakeholders; and in contributing to high-profile, commercially important and often sensitive trade issues. The work will also provide with the opportunity to develop technical and policy experience with respect to both trade policy and trade negotiations.

Qualifications:

Education

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1. have full-time master’s student status in an MA program for example, Political Science, Economics, IMMA, History or Canadian Studies
  2. you must be registered in the MA Co-op program at the University of Lethbridge (contact Di Young  young@uleth.ca  or Lynette Harty at  harty@uleth.ca) for further information and to apply.

Knowledge and Experience

 Experience in conducting research and analysis

  • Experience in the preparation of reports
  • Knowledge of Canadian trade policy priorities and objectives

 

Abilities and Personal Suitability

  • Interpersonal Skills, Strong Writing Skills, Analytical Skills, Initiative, Judgement, Adaptability and Teamwork.

Asset Qualifications

  • Proficiency in both of Canada’s Official Languages
