Part 8: Thesis Route

Requesting a Thesis Oral Defence

When a student has completed the Thesis, she or he must inform the Thesis Supervisor regarding readiness to defend his or her thesis work.

After the student notifies the Thesis Supervisor regarding readiness to defend, he or she gives the Thesis Supervisor an appropriately formatted PDF copy of the thesis manuscript that adheres to the Thesis and Project Paper format regulations (see Part 9: Thesis and Project Paper Format Regulations). Students are not permitted to make changes to this manuscript until after the Thesis Oral Defence. Once the Thesis Supervisor has read the Thesis and believes it is of sufficient quality to proceed to defence, the Thesis Supervisor then communicates with the Thesis Supervisory Committee that she or he believes the student is ready to proceed to the Thesis Oral Defence (and the rationale for same), chooses a date that is satisfactory for all the Thesis Supervisory Committee members, and follows up with any Thesis Supervisory Committee members who have questions or concerns about the student proceeding to a Thesis Oral Defence.

The Thesis Supervisor completes the Request for Final Thesis Examination form and recommends:

  • The composition of the Thesis Examination Committee
  • The tentative schedule of the Thesis Oral Defence
  • The format of the Thesis Oral Defence

In order to meet the degree requirements by the end of the semester, it is recommended that the Request for Final Thesis Examination form be completed and a PDF copy of the defence thesis be submitted to the Graduate Program Office in the Faculty of Health Sciences by the following deadlines:
