Art and Drama Summer Camp Fun!

Instead of spending the summer wishing you had something exciting to do why not create a sculpture, paint a picture, make up a play, or appear on stage. Come and participate in one or more of the U of L Faculty of Fine Arts Drama and Art Camps. There are lots of week-long camps to choose from. All camps run Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. Four-day camps are denoted. The registration fee of $205 per camp ($165/4-day camp) includes all materials, camp T-shirt, and lunch each day.

Drama Adventures for ages 7 to 10
Use your body, voice and imagination to create a world of original characters and stories in this action-packed camp. Participants must be able to read. The camp concludes with a performance.

Acting, comedy, costumes, make-up, improvisation and more! These camps are perfect older participants looking for a dramatic challenge.

Explore drawing, painting, mask-making, printmaking, sculpture and more -- something new and interesting every day. No experience necessary! The camp concludes with an exhibition of the creative exploits of participants.

Job: Instructors are responsible for curriculum development, implementation, administration, and supervision of all camp participants and activities.

Campers
Two groups of students - 7-10 year olds (5 camps) and 11-15 year olds (2 camps)

Camps: Monday –Friday from July 6 through Aug. 20

Days/Times

Teaching time: 9 am - noon and 1 – 4 pm, Monday to Friday

Supervision time: 8:30 am to 9 am (participant drop off), noon to 1 pm (lunch hour) and until the last student is picked up (about 4:30 pm)

Contract
Instructors are paid $13/hour for seven weeks of instructing plus 8 days of preparation time. Curriculum must be developed and submitted for approval by June 16.

U of L Voice Majors selected for National Youth Choir

Voice majors from the U of L have been selected for three of the four positions open to Alberta university students with the prestigious National Youth Choir. “Having three of the singers come from our program speaks both to its strength and the talent of the marvelous young musicians who choose to study here,” says Dr. Janet Youngdahl, U of L Singers director.

Jason Ragan, Tina Alexander and Aaron Bartholomew are preparing to join the choir as they tour across Canada this May. “It’s an honor to be selected,” says Bartholomew. “I expect the experience will be invaluable.” All three singers are also members of the U of L Singers and continue to gain exceptional experience from the educational and performance opportunities from their participation with that group.

This year’s National Youth Choir director is Victoria Merideth, esteemed choral director of the award-winning University of Western Ontario Singers. The National Youth Choir rehearses together for a week before touring various locations throughout the country to perform. Dates and locations are to be announced later in January.

Global Drums Returns from Japan

Despite confronting typhoon winds of up to 162 kph, the U of L Global Drums Steel Band, under the direction of Adam Mason, completed a successful tour of Japan in September. Representing Canada at PANFESTA, Japan’s National Steel Band Festival, in Yokohoma, 12 students, Adam Mason and guest artists Tracy Thorton and Alan Coyle performed to an enthusiastic dancing crowd.

“Our group enjoyed cultural visits to the ancient capitol of Kyoto and home stays with families in Towada in conjunction with the Lethbridge Twinning Society,” says Mason. “We took part in a traditional tea ceremony and represented our sister city of Towada with a public concert and community workshop.”

However, their trip was cut short on Sept. 5, when the group was forced to evacuate Japan due to Typhoon Krovanh, which put an abrupt end to PANFESTA. “Fortunately it was right after Global Drums finished their performance,” says Mason. “Global Drums students jumped in without being asked to help festival organizers dismantle tents, which were starting to come apart in the heavy winds.” Not even the weather could dampen the spirits of these dedicated percussionists.
