New Media 2850 – Social Media and Your Digital Self

This course gets students to create and polish a cohesive online professional presence for their future careers or creative goals.

Prerequisite: Second-year standing (a minimum of 30.0 credit hours)

Note: Not counted in the core New Media courses in the BFA (New Media) program

New Media 2850 – Digital Video Art

This course will seek to contextualize a history of digital video art from the 1970s to present and attempt to establish a critical knowledge of the medium in contemporary digital media practices. Theoretical underpinnings from selected texts and weekly discussions will highlight a hands-on approach to the production of works during lab times.

Prerequisite: NMED 1000

Recommended background: NMED 2030

New Media 3850 – Expanded Cinema: Moving Images and their Forgotten Futures

A theoretical and practical investigation of experimental moving image practices from early and pre-cinema to contemporary digital media.

Prerequisite: New Media 2030 or Art 3060 or Art 3061

New Media 3850 – DVD Authoring and Design

An introduction to concepts and techniques of DVD production with studies in content analysis, interface design and the user experience. Designing, preparing and integrating various media assets will be applied to the development of cohesive interactive menu systems.

Prerequisites: New Media 2010 and 2030


New Media 3850 – Game Design: Theory and Practice                                                           

An introduction to game design fundamentals, principles and practice. Traditional and contemporary approaches to game design will be explored through an iterative process of game analysis, design, production and critique.
NOTE: Emphasis will be placed on non-digital games theory and production (board games) as an end in itself and as a foundation for digital game design and production.
NOTE: This course will be the prerequisite for NMED 4850: Video Game Production.
Prerequisite: New Media 3030 (3-D Computer Modeling and Animation)                       

New Media 4850 – Advanced 3D Visualization

An introduction to the history, theory and practice of Advanced 3D computer graphics. CG production methods covered will include:  Character design and modeling (caricature); digital sculpting and texture painting tools; advanced lighting, texturing and rendering; working with CAD and GIS files; 3D team production best-practice methodologies; working with game engines; camera matching and tracking; physics simulations and particles; bluescreen/3D CG production.
