Gushul Residency Location & Facilities

Artists and writers who are selected for a residency are housed in either the Studio or Cottage. The Writer's Cottage will accommodate a maximum of two writers and the Studio will accommodate two working artists with room for two additional non-working occupants. Priority for the studio will be given to visual and media artists, as it provides an abundance of north light and the work space necessary to produce large two-dimensional works. These are separate buildings situated in proximity to one another in the town of Blairmore, Alberta, situated directly beside the historic Trans-Canada Railway line in the spectacular eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains.

For more information and photographs of the facilities, check out our online galleries: Gushul Studio and Gushul Cottage.

Residents of the studios, who have come from as far away as the Yukon to new Mexico and from British Columbia to Switzerland, have had this to say:

"A stimulating and productive month - wonderful environment."

"Incredible experience for my art and spirit! I will remember this place for years to come."

"What a tremendous opportunity for growth and reflection."

"A most positive and productive period of art making! The natural light is unbelievable."

"I have had an enlightening experience in an interesting place."

"Surely the finest naturally lit studio and most comfortable working and living space."

"A great time landscape painting ... wonderful mountain scenery. The studio and house provided a wonderful place to stay and work, and the landscape offers everything."

The Crowsnest Pass encompasses a string of original coal mining towns built along the Trans-Canada Railway line, near the Alberta-British Columbia border. The historic town of Blairmore maintains its old world charms and is within easy driving distance of urban centres such as Calgary, Lethbridge and Banff. It is also very near the Canada-United States border. A range of goods and services (restaurants, grocery stores, laundromat, pharmacies, shops, museums, etc.) are available in the town of Blairmore, a short walk from the Gushul property.
