Arts & Culture

Lethbridge residents take great pleasure in a wealth of cosmopolitan cultural activities, from art exhibits and collections, to theatre productions showcasing an impressive array of local and regional talent, a broad range of public lectures, poetry readings, musical concerts, and Symphony performances.

The University of Lethbridge boasts a $22 million Performing Arts Centre and is home to one of the country's finest Canadian and International art collections.  Over 30 individual organizations promote and offer activities and services relating to historical or multicultural interests within the city.  Included in this is the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association (Multicultural Heritage Centre), which promotes multiculturalism and ethnic heritage to the community and its members.

Bowman Arts Centre
A designated Historic Site and home of the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge.  The Bowman houses two art galleries, many artists groups and guilds (Sketch Club, Weavers, Textile Surface Design, Potters , Stained Glass Artisans, and others).  Programming includes exhibitions, art rentals, studio classes and workshops in visual and performing arts for all ages.

University of Lethbridge Art Gallery
The U of L Art Gallery has one of Canada's most important art collections, the strength of which is its diversity.  With more than 13,000 objects, the collection includes works by artists from Canada, America, and Europe as well as media ranging from drawing, printmaking and painting to photography, sculpture and installation.  The majority of works span the 19th and 20th centuries, although earlier periods are represented and the collection continues to grow with 21st century additions.

University of Lethbridge Fine Arts Productions
The U of L Faculty of Fine Arts presents a varied and entertaining season of musical performances, theatre productions, New media presentations, opera and more between September and June each year.  Theatre offerings range from timeless classics to contemporary Canadian plays.  Performing groups include:  Jazz Ensemble, Opera Workshop, U of L Singers, Vox Musica Choir, Wind Orchestra and World Drumming Ensemble.

Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives
The Galt provides a bridge to Lethbridge's past and a "walk" through over 100 years of Southern Alberta heritage. It features:  A stunning viewing gallery overlooking the historic river valley, interactive exhibits in the Discovery Hall, an Education Centre accessible to all learners, and expanded Archives and Collections facilities for full research access.  Public programs such as Historical Walks, Galt Hospital hauntings, and Christmas sleepovers appeal to many interests.

Yates Memorial Centre & Sterndale Bennett Theatre
Centrally located, this 500 seat theatre is home to the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, the renowned New West Theatre productions, the Lethbridge Musical Theatre, Playgoers, and also provides a showcase for a variety of local and regional performing arts groups. Art gallery space is available for local artist exhibitions.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens
Built in 1967 as a centennial project, this authentic Japanese garden is a symbol of the Japanese-Canadian friendship that exists in our community. The garden is a place of contemplation and peace, where five traditional garden styles are joined by a meandering path. Patterned after 16th century Japanese architecture, the Nikka Yuko Pavilion houses a number of art and cultural exhibits throughout the season. Waterfalls, foot bridges, lanterns and pagodas create an unparalleled vista of artistry in nature. Special weekend events highlight Japanese arts and culture.

Fort Whoop-Up Interpretive Centre
Located in Indian Battle Park, Fort Whoop-Up is an authentic replica of the original fort built by Montana traders on Canadian soil .  This notorious Fort represents the last of Canada's wild west in the days before the North West Mounted Police arrived in 1874 to halt the illicit trade in whiskey.  Costumed tour guides provide site tours, entertainment, hay rides, chuck-wagon bar-b-ques, trail wagon rides or western breakfast package are also available.
