Any research project that involves human participants requires either an approval or a waiver from the Faculty of Education Human Subjects Research Committee (HSRC). This includes:
• faculty research
• graduate projects and theses
• undergraduate and graduate independent studies
The approval or waiver must be obtained prior to the recruitment and data collection phases of the study.
To ensure that all human research is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards and that the public, the researchers and the University are all protected from harm.
The policies and procedures of the HSRC, while in compliance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, have been developed to specifically address the types of research in which the Faculty of Education engages.
To this end, the HSRC has interpreted the Tri-Council Standards document as broadly as possible without compromising its basic principles.

(Note: This exemplar contains documentation which address all components of a complete, comprehensive and complex HSR Application. Your application may not require all of these components depending upon the complexity of your research.)
HSR Application Exemplar 2 (.pdf)
(Note: This exemplar represents the HSR Application for a less complex research project, consisting of a simple on-line survey requiring the consent only of adults who voluntarily choose to participate. Your application mayrequire more information and supporting documentation depending upon the complexity of your research.)
