Questions on Track Layout Software

January 9, 1999  Does anyone have some advice to offer involving the use of track layout software? This could be either positive or negative. For example, it might begun, "I have no need for such programs. Instead I ....", or "I always use such software, and have found it valuable because ...." or "I tried a package and found that it had the following weaknesses:...". or some other kind of useful comment or suggestion.

During the week of Jan. 9 - 17, 1999 the rec.models.railroad has had a couple of postings on the topic of track layout software. Both Cadrail and 3rdPlanit were mentioned. I have visited both web sites and have downloaded the demo version for 3rdPlanit. It looks pretty good. I spent about 3 hours yesterday playing with the demo.

Jan. 20, 1999 I order 3rdPlanIt. Now the questions will shift to "How do I do ....?".

August 25, 1999  I have almost finished designing a track layout plan. I found that I did not use this software at all. My tendency was to simply start laying some track and buildings on the tables and then move them around until everything seemed to fit. At the moment it appears that I will not need this software to help me design the layout. However I may come back to it later as a method for "documenting" my layout for others to see.

I consider this question to be finished.
