Let's play with Problem #1 for a bit.
The basic problem, as I see it, is that I do not have a genuinely workable design. I think it is fairly close, but in model railroading close is not good enough. Part of the layout involves a change in elevation so
that trains may pass over and under each other. This is working, but everything is very temporary and just resting on blocks. Some of the inclines look very artificial since they are just boards. I am doubtful that
even if I made the track layout permanent, that I would also be able to make realistic scenery to accommodate the different elevations and proximity of tracks.
I recently purchased some of Woodland Scenics Subterrain materials. My initial impression of this approach is very positive, since it is based on the premise of a level table surface (which I have). However it has also reinforced my belief that my present layout is fundamentally flawed and actually unworkable when I take into account the normal pragmatic factors of track curvature and gentle inclines.
Thus my first thoughts are to:
- back off for a bit
- look for additional advice by:
- creating this web site & hoping for feedback
- joining rec.models.railroad
- think seriously about purchasing some track layout software.

- 3rdPlanit [Jan. 17, 1999]
- other?
On January 20, 1999 I order 3rdPlanIt software for layout planning. My next major task is to become familiar with this software and to design a layout(s) that I can submit to various people for comments and
suggestions.
