who we are

Doug Parker, Director of Physical Plant

Preservation of the quality of life we as Canadians currently enjoy for future generations to come is part of our responsibility today. The greater the influence the individual has on the use of natural resources and the protection of our environment the greater the responsibility. Ensuring a continued progress in the reduction of waste while creating a healthy and productive learning and work environment reduces the University operating costs while increasing the quality of life on campus. This is a responsible function of Physical Plant

Rick Peter, Operation Systems Supervisor- Utilities Department

My present position since 2001in the Operation Systems Supervisor role has given me and my staff many opportunities to look at existing systems and evaluate how best to operate them giving the University optimum efficiency with little to no effect to the University community. So my inspiration in participating with the Sustainability committee is easy, as it is a natural fit as to what the University, Utility department does on a daily bases.

Tal Meidinger, Electrical Systems Supervisor - Utilities Department

Participating within the Sustainability Committee allows the free flow of ideas to form a number of strategies. From creating a more energy efficient environment, a reduction in waste, increase recyclability and awareness, to campus and community involvement.
As the Campus Electrical Supervisor my immediate role is identifying areas of old electrical technologies. Through investigation and implementation of new technologies, I can contribute to the reduction of energy usage, which has a number of positive consequences. These benefits include reduction in the electrical/energy costs to the University as well as reducing fossil fuel exhaust gases (CO gases) into the environment.
Further secondary involvements are providing support to other sustainable and conservational ideas and projects.

Dr. Rick Mrazek, Associate Dean – Graduate Studies & Research

My beliefs, motivation and inspiration in participating in the sustainability committee are based on the theory of pedagogy of place.
While those of us involved in the education profession pay great attention to the content and methodology of our lessons, rarely do we pay as much attention to the message or “lessons” of the physical spaces or environment in which we teach. We can probably agree that place has tremendous pedagogical power, yet what are the lessons communicated by the structures and grounds of our schools and educational institutions? I believe that the sustainability committee can direct changes to our campus that will benefit the overall educational experiences of the students.

Nathalie Viau, Education Coordinator

I am very fortunate to have been invited to join a committee, which have common goals in trying to attain a more sustainable campus. Having a background in environmental science and education, I bring to the committee a fresh perspective on the various components; social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability.

Shauna Haag, Administrative Support – Physical Plant

We only have one Earth. It is important that we preserve this environment for the enjoyment of future generations. I am proud to belong to a department and committee that take this global issue seriously and that is proactive towards energy conservation.
