Curriculum Laboratory Recommended Books for Promoting Multiculturalism |
For further assistance in using any of the resources in the Lab, please at the Curriculum Lab Information Services DeskWhat is multicultural education?
- It can be defined as "integrated teaching process which deals with ethnic groups, religious groups, gender, children's issues, handicaps and special needs, giftedness, ageism (cited in Bainbridge, 1999)."
- Its' goal should be to affirm and celebrate the differences and similarities of people around the world, and throughout history (Bainbridge, 1999).
Why promote multicultural books in your classroom? Some basic reasons are listed below:
- According to Esses and Gardner, "the representation of visible minorities in Canada is expected to continue to rise, so that, by the year 2016, it is estimated that visible minorities will comprise close to 20% of the adult population and 25% of the children (cited in Bainbridge, 1999)."
- It promotes self esteem in the differences in all of us.
- It promotes respect for "cultural diversity and common values in Canada," as well as pride in who we are, as outlined in the Goals and Standards Applicable to the provision of Basic Education in Canada.
- Can you think of other reasons?
What is a "multicultural" book? You will get a hint by looking at the subject headings and annotations in the list of books below. Pay particular attention to the geographic location and time period. Multicultural books cover an extremely wide range of subjects, locations, and time periods!
What is a "good" multicultural book? You should use the same criteria in evaluating books with multicultural themes as any other book, such as:
- Does the book tell an interesting story?
- Is the story appropriate for the intended age range?
- What does the reader anticipate from the title and format of the book?
- Is the theme overtly moralistic?
- Are the characters convincing, and do they grow and change from their experiences?
- If it is a picture book, do the images add significantly to the the text, and visa versa?
- What have reviewers said about this title?
In addition, you can use these criteria:
- Are stereotypes avoided? While it is okay to portray the distinctive aspects of a cultural group, a balanced approach will also portray some of the variety in clothing, customs, occupations etc. within a culture.
- Are specific cultures portrayed in a positive, yet realistic manner?
- Does the author know much about the culture he/she is writing about?
See the handout, "Searching for Multicultural Library Materials for Students" for details on how to find other titles similar to the ones listed in the chart, below.Look at some of the books listed below. Discuss what criteria makes some of these titles "good" multicultural books.
