Literature Integration in the Curriculum

For further assistance in using any of the resources in the Lab, please ask at the Curriculum Laboratory Information Services Desk.

One of the ways to teach concepts in the various school subjects is by incorporating and integrating children’s and young adult literature into the school curriculum. Literature can be used not only to introduce a topic, but also to convey information in a different way. For more information on this topic, see the handout, "Teaching Ideas Showcase:  Picture Books Across the Curriculum."

To find materials on integrating children’s and young adult literature into the regular school curriculum, you can:

1) Check the Teacher's editions of the authorized textbooks, which often contain literature connections, or
2) Use one or more of the following subject headings when searching in the library catalogue:
Subject and literature:

e.g.:
Mathematics and literature
Literature and science
Art and literature

For Social Studies and literature, use keyword search, "social sciences and literature"
  • Children's literature--Study and teaching (Good for collections of activities for different titles, and specific book activities) -- Focuses on K-6 titles
  • Fiction--Study and teaching (Good for specific book activities, including novel studies) -- Focuses on young adult titles, and crossover titles
  • Books and reading
  • Interdisciplinary approach in education (Teaching with themes)
  • To combine specific subjects, search the catalogue using the "Keyword" option, and limit to materials in the Curriculum Laboratory
    e.g. "art and science"
