Co-operative Education combines work experience with academic studies and has gained international recognition as the preferred way to complete a degree. It creates a partnership between the students, the University and the employer. The goal of the Program is to offer students a broader learning environment, opportunities for excellent work experience and networking with employers.

From Rocky Mountain House to Ottawa – One Co-op Student’s
Journey
…I
began reflecting upon my journey with Co-op and the effect that it has had on
my life. In doing this, I realized that Co-op has had the very effect that every
program coordinator (Co-op or otherwise) hopes that their program will have
on an individual. To explain this I must go back a little further, to the beginning
of my post-secondary education. I hardly gave a thought to my career –
it was the furthest thing from my mind. After completing as many courses as
I could at the college level I moved on to the University of Lethbridge. Shortly
after I arrived I visited a career counselor. He recommended that I try the
Co-op program to help me gain some insight into what kind of career I wanted
to pursue.
The
club a Red Deer woman runs has won a prestigious international award.
Jennifer Sundsten, who grew up in Red Deer and is the president of the University
of Lethbridge Rotaract Club, recently accepted the 2008 Outstanding Project
Award for the club at a Rotaract meeting in Los Angeles, Calif.
Rotaract is a Rotary International-sponsored service club for young men and
women between age 18 and 30. Sundsten’s club was among clubs from Spain,
South Athe Philippines, Turkey, India and Brazil that were honoured. “I
definitely think this will not only help us with retaining members, but gaining
new members,” Sundsten said. “I think we have set an example for
other Rotaract Clubs, and even Rotarian Clubs, and they have recognized that
as well.”

Student Testimonial Co-operative
education has undoubtedly enhanced my undergraduate experience. During my work
terms with the Government of Alberta I have been able to apply the theoretical
ideas I have studied in the social sciences and humanities while at the same
time gain valuable experience and make important professional contacts. For
me, a liberal arts education is a real privilege; with the addition of co-operative
education to my program, I will be in a better position to give back to society.
