What to Expect on the Day of Convocation

Convocation is an exciting celebration, and we hope to make the experience smooth so that you can really enjoy yourself in the moment. We'll have staff to guide you through every step of the day. You can also watch this short video which will show you what to expect when you arrive for your ceremony.

Here is an overview of what you can expect:

  • Arrive in the University Hall Atrium at 8:30 a.m. to pick up your parchment and regalia. There will be coatcheck available, and staff to help you put on your regalia.
  • Line up down the University Hall level 6 hallway by 9:30 a.m.
  • Grads, senior administrators and academic staff walk up the hill to the main gym. Wear shoes that are comfortable!
  • The ceremony opens with the National Anthem, reading of the reflection, report from the president, and honour song.
  • An honorary degree will be given out, and the recipient will address the grads.
  • Each grad will walk across the stage, have their name read to the audience, and shake hands with the chancellor. We will have marks on the floor for where you should stop; we have maped out the steps in the sections below.
  • We will take a photo of you as you shake hands with the chancellor. This photo will be available a week after the ceremony for to purchase online at order.mountainwest.ca using the code UNIVOFLETH.
  • After all of the grads have crossed the stage, you will be members of our alumni family, congratulations! We will have refreshments available after the ceremony, and you can celebrate with your family and friends.
  • You will return your regalia outside of the bookstore (level 2 of the Students' Union building) by 2 p.m.

When you cross the stage (undergraduate and master's degrees)

You will follow these steps when you cross the stage for your undergraduate program (bachelor's degree, diploma or certificate) or master's degree:

  1. Our marshals will guide you to the front corner of the stage from your seat.
  2. Hand your parchment to the platform marshal (the person at the microphone) and walk past them to the mark on the floor that looks like a foot.
  3. Smile for the livestream video camera while the platform marshal reads out your name and any distinction.
  4. Retrieve your parchment from the platform marshal and move to shake the Chancellor's hand. Smile and hold your parchment with the logo facing out; a photograph will be taken of you as you shake hands with the Chancellor. You will also shake hands with your Dean(s).
  5. Move across the stage to the GSA, ULSU, and Alumni Association representatives. You will shake their hands and be presented with your alumni association pin.
  6. Return to your seat.

When you cross the stage (PhD grads)

PhD grads have a slightly different process, because they carry their hoods with them for the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies to hood them on the platform. If you are graduating with a PhD, you will follow these steps:

  1. Walk past the platform marshal and stand on the mark on the floor that looks like a foot.
  2. Smile for the livestream video camera while the platform marshal reads out your name and thesis title.
  3. Dean Robert Wood will approach you; lift your arm to present your hood to him.
  4. Take off your hat, and stand facing the audience while Dean Wood lifts the hood over your head and places it over your shoulders. He will also shake your hand at this point.
  5. Put your hat back on, and move to shake hands with the Chancellor. Smile and hold your parchment with the logo out while you shake hands with the chancellor; a photo will be taken of you at this point.
  6. Move across the stage to the GSA, ULSU, and Alumni Association representatives. You will shake their hands and be presented with your alumni association pin.
