Science Literacy Week kickoff

Monday, Sept. 18, 6 to 8 p.m., Kids’ Corner, Lethbridge Public Library, Main Branch

Representatives of The Let’s Talk Science Outreach program at the U of L will be offering an evening of experiments and creativity for children from kindergarten to Grade 6.

Architecture & Design Now — Philip Christou & Florian Beigel

Monday, Sept. 18, 6 to 8:50 p.m., L1060, Library

Philip Christou was born in Lethbridge in 1956 and studied at McGill, the U of L and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design before studying architecture at the Architectural Association London. He is now professor emeritus at London Metropolitan University. He has worked with Florian Beigel Architects and the Architecture Research Unit since 1985. Christou and Beigel, director of the Architecture Research Unit, will talk about four urban design and architectural projects as they focus their discussion on the dimension of time and collective memory in architecture.

Lunch & Learn — 150 StartUps Challenge

Tuesday, Sept. 19, noon to 2 p.m., SU300A, Students’ Union Building

Craig Elias, entrepreneur in residence at Bow Valley College, will talk about how to take an idea and turn it into a business. The 150 Startups challenge is a multi-year initiative designed by Bow Valley College to expand Alberta’s entrepreneurial capacity through collaboration between all the province’s 26 colleges and universities.

Wednesday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., track area, 1st Choice Savings Centre

Counselling and Career Services, Career Bridge, Co-operative Education and Applied Studies are hosting the annual career fair to give students the opportunity to get information on various career paths and meet potential future employers.

Take Two — Federal Science Review and You

Thursday, Sept. 21, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Markin Hall Atrium

Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president research, will talk about the report and recommendations arising from the Federal Science Review Panel, of which she was a member. Malacrida will talk about her hopes for changes in the future.

Lego Serious Play Workshop

Thursday, Sept. 21, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., L1102, Prentice Institute Boardroom, Library

Dr. Stephen Dann, a visiting professor from Australia National University who’s also a trained Lego Serious Play facilitator, will lead participants through this latest technique that’s being used by industry in meetings and education in classrooms.

PUBlic Professor Series — From the Beginnings of Life to Modern Medicine: Why RNA Matters

Thursday, Sept. 21, 7 to 9 p.m., Lethbridge Lodge, 320 Scenic Dr. S.

Dr. Ute Kothe, a biochemistry professor, will talk about the role of RNA (RiboNucleic Acid). RNA is a copy of the genetic material called DNA and is of fundamental importance in life. It is thought to have played crucial roles in the early stages of life on Earth. Kothe will talk about this jack-of-all trades molecule and her leading research into RNA modification, folding and its role in the formation of proteins.

School of Liberal Education — Social Justice Symposium

Friday, Sept. 22, noon to 4 p.m., Markin Hall Atrium

The symposium kicks off with a keynote address by Dr. Bryan Kolb, a U of L neuroscientist, titled Brain Development: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Three blocks of shorter talks by U of L faculty members on various aspects of social justice follow.

Monia Mazigh — The Power of Stories: From Despair to Hope

Friday, Sept. 22, 1 to 2 p.m., D634, University Hall

Monia Mazigh was catapulted onto the public stage in 2002 when her husband, Maher Arar, was deported to Syria where he was tortured and held without charge. Mazigh campaigned tirelessly for his release. She holds a PhD in finance from McGill University and has published a memoir titled Hope and Despair. She is also the author of Mirrors and Mirages and Hope Has Two Daughters.  She will talk about her experience as a writer. This presentation is sponsored by the French Language Center and the Department of Modern Languages.
